I obtained my Bachelors of Social Work from UofC in 2006 and have worked as a Registered Social Worker in the adoption field serving in a variety of roles since graduation. Through this I have learned in depth about trauma and attachment issues. A number of years ago I worked in a recovery home for women fleeing sex trafficking. I began as a frontline worker and moved into the role of assistant team lead and then became the team leader. It was one of the most challenging albeit rewarding jobs I have ever had. I have also worked in a home for teens who were trafficked and exploited.
Several women that I worked with over the years would express a desire to visit my horses and I began to witness connections that these ladies were forming with the animals and nature and the positive impact it was having. At that point the peace, and a certain vulnerability with the animals, became evident to me and from there my focus was directed to equine therapy. I took a course through Higher Trails to become certified in Equine Assisted Learning coinciding with a two year Equine/ Animal Assisted Therapy course through Healing Hooves. Since then I have successfully been practicing equine therapy and continue to marvel at its benefits.
In 2019, I went to Texas to become a TBRI (Trust-Based Relational Intervention) Practitioner. Currently I am one of only two practitioners in Alberta. Through this training I offer private or group parenting sessions. The course helps train parents in parenting children who have experienced trauma of any kind. It is beneficial in working with mothers and their children participating in our program.
